At Floor Coverings International Monmouth County, homeowners in the great Monmouth and Ocean County area trust us with their carpeting needs. With the thousands of carpet options available, we understand that it can be daunting to pick just one. Here is a quick overview of the different types of carpeting and how to choose the right one for your home:

Pile Type

Almost all of the wall-to-wall carpeting you will find in the United States is tufted carpet. This means that it is made by threading yarn through a backing material. There are two main families of tufted carpeting: cut pile and loop pile

Cut Pile

When tufted carpets are manufactured, you end up with rows and rows of loops. The last step to create cut pile carpeting is to severe each loop into two strands. This results in a comfortable, soft carpet. That’s why cut pile carpet is the most common type of carpeting found in homes. Here are a few different types of cut pile:

  • Saxony carpeting is smooth and elegant. It features short, dense fibers perfect for formal spaces.
  • Textured carpeting earned its name from its unique texture. To add strength, each fiber is twisted. Textured carpets are the most common residential carpet type.
  • Frieze carpets are twisted much like textured carpeting, however each fiber is spun ten times or more, resulting in a fun and casual look.

Loop Pile

When the loops are left intact, you get loop pile carpeting. This strong and study carpet family is not as comfortable as cut pile, but it will stand up to years of use. In fact, it is even found in office and retail settings.

Material

Carpeting can be made from a variety of materials, each with their own unique advantages and disadvantages. Fibers are commonly described as natural or synthetic.

Synthetic

These are by far the most common type. Made from petroleum, these sturdy, reliable carpets are a great value. Nylon is the most expensive but also the highest in quality. There are also olefin and polyester options to consider.

Natural

Less common are carpets that utilize natural fibers, such as wool. This is a great option for homeowners looking for luxurious, gorgeous carpeting. Wool is as durable as it is comfortable, and it would be found in every home if not for the price.
