As the temperatures continue to drop here in Monmouth
County, we know that winter weather is on its way. Snowy days can be fun but
snow, ice, mud and salt can all cause damage to your home’s floors. To help you
out, we’ve put together some tips on protecting your floors from the elements
this winter!

Remove shoes

Encourage family members and friends to remove their boots
and shoes before they enter your home. Keep a boot tray outside for especially
muddy footwear, and have an easily accessible shoe rack inside your entryway.
Making your home a “no shoes” home for the winter means you’ll protect your
floors AND have less cleaning to do!

Door mats

One of the simplest yet most effective things you can do
this winter is to lay quality door mats on each side of every entrance into
your home. Heavy-duty doormats will collect moisture and dirt before it’s
tracked into your home. A doormat placed on the inside of your door will also
add an extra layer of protection against dirty boots and shoes. For the outside
of your door, look for rubber doormats or doormats with bristles which will
help collect dirt. These mats are meant to withstand wear and tear and are also
easy to clean – they typically only require a quick rinse with a hose.

Rugs and runners

Consider investing in some extra rugs and runners to place
throughout your home during the winter months. Not only will this protect your
floors, but it will also help create a warm, cozy atmosphere in your home. There
are many different styles of rugs available in a wide variety of colors and
patterns, so you should have no trouble finding one that fits your home’s décor.

Sealant

If you have hardwood floors, you may want to consider applying
a fresh coat of sealant. Sealants create a protective coating over your
hardwood floors and repel water and moisture.
