Some people in Monmouth and Ocean County may have the opinion that parquet wood flooring is out of style and shouldn’t be used in modern homes. That may be true to some extent, as parquet floors were very common decades ago in almost all areas of mid-century modern homes. However, parquet flooring still has a place in today’s décor. Depending on the style and pattern of the wood, parquet flooring can add a vintage charm or modern intrigue to a space.
What is Parquet?
Also known as parquetry, parquet dates back to France in the 1600s. It refers to flooring that is made of small cuts of wood installed in geometric patterns. Some of the most popular contemporary patterns are herringbone, chevron, and hexagon. Complex flooring patterns paired with minimalist, simple décor elements seems to be a modern style that is growing in popularity.
Benefits of Parquet Flooring
In addition to the very unique aesthetic a parquet floor creates, the flooring style has other benefits as well. One is that it’s easy to install compared to other types of flooring. It’s the only solid wood floor that can be glued down and doesn’t require any nailing. It also comes in manageable tile sizes (generally 12” x 12” tiles), which makes it easy to handle. Parquet flooring allows for a lot of customization in designing the pattern of the wood floor layout, giving you a lot of creative freedom with your floor design.
Downsides of Parquet Flooring
One of the downsides of parquet flooring is that it cannot be installed below grade (in basements) because it is made of solid wood. It’s also very thin, which means it doesn’t provide much structural value. It’s thinner than both solid and engineered hardwood flooring. Another downside is that it’s difficult to sand if it ever needs to be repaired or refinished. Sanding needs to be done consistently with the grain of the wood, which can be difficult because the pieces of wood are small and don’t run in the same direction.
Parquet wood flooring may not be for everyone, but when done right, it can look truly beautiful. It’s an acquired taste, but those who love it really love it.
