Linoleum flooring was introduced in the 1960s and quickly became a flooring staple because its rich color palate worked well with the décor of that era. It has received more attention recently because of its environmentally friendly nature.

Don’t confuse linoleum with vinyl; the two are very different. Vinyl flooring and linoleum are made with different materials and vinyl’s patterns are printed on the surface, where linoleum’s color is mixed in to with material. In addition, vinyl advancements such as with luxury vinyl tile tend to give vinyl the upper-hand when looking for realistic imitations of hardwood or stone floors. However, linoleum floors are not without their own advantages. shutterstock_136162241 (c) Elena Elisseeva

  • Easy to install
  • Durable
  • Low environmental impact

Our Monmouth and Ocean County customers have found that the biggest advantages to linoleum flooring are how easy it is to install, how durable it is, and its low environmental impact. Linoleum flooring is crafted from renewable ingredients such as cork dust, linseed oil, and rosin, making it less harmful on the environment to harvest these materials for flooring. It is extremely durable thanks to a protective coating and can be expected to last for many years.

  • Soft, Prone to Dents and Scratches
  • Changes in Humidity
  • ‘Ambering’

One drawback of linoleum flooring is that it can be quite soft and this means it is susceptible to being scratched or dented from heavy objects. Linoleum also naturally constricts and contracts, especially if moisture is involved. This means linoleum is not ideal in the bathroom. If there is a large change in humidity your floors may warp. Moisture from improper installation can also lead to warping and other damage. Look to trusted flooring professionals like Floor Coverings International to properly install your linoleum flooring. When linoleum is exposed to direct sunlight, it can ‘amber’ causing a slightly yellowish cast. Be sure to use window coverings to protect your linoleum floors.
